Artists have started using VR technology to create experiences that break free from the constraints of traditional performance spaces. These immersive experiences allow audiences to step directly into the narrative, interact with characters, and explore imaginative worlds, all from the comfort of their own homes.

This article explores some of the best VR performance art experiences currently available, highlighting how artists are merging creativity with technology to craft unforgettable journeys that engage the senses and challenge our perceptions of reality.

How did we select the best VR apps for Performance Arts?

  • We made sure to include a variety of performance arts experiences from dance performances to theatrical plays and operas.
  • It was important to select experiences that provide a high level of immersion and interactivity. This could involve the ability to move freely within the virtual space, engage with elements of the performance, or interact with other participants.
  • The technical quality of the VR experience as also evaluated, as we focused on the resolution, frame rate, and audio quality. High-quality visuals and sound are essential for a captivating VR performance.
  • We sought out performances that creatively utilize VR technology to enhance storytelling or artistic expression. This involved unique narrative paths, interactive elements, or the integration of other technologies, such as augmented reality.

DUST

DUST is a VR dance performance that offers audiences a unique perspective by allowing them to experience the performance as if they were a speck of dust floating through the space. Created by Prague-based artists Mária Júdová and Andrej Boleslavský, this innovative project combines contemporary dance with cutting-edge VR technology to explore new narratives and viewpoints in the performing arts.

Audiences don VR headsets to view the performance from the perspective of a dust particle, providing a distinct vantage point that enables them to float freely around the dancers. This immersive experience is designed to challenge traditional perceptions of body, space, and time.

DUST utilizes Kinect depth sensors and custom software to capture volumetric recordings of the dancers from multiple angles. The performance space is further enhanced by 3D backgrounds created through photogrammetry, which involves using hundreds of photos of building interiors. This combination results in a high-resolution 3D virtual model that audiences can explore.

The concept of DUST is inspired by the idea that the elements forming life on Earth originate from stardust. It draws on themes from Eugene Thacker’s philosophy book, “In the Dust of This Planet,” which examines the notion of perceiving the world from non-human perspectives.

VR_I by Gilles Jobin

VR_I is a virtual reality dance piece created by Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin in collaboration with Artanim, a group renowned for their expertise in motion capture technology. This innovative project merges contemporary dance with VR, offering participants a unique sensory experience that challenges traditional perceptions of reality and space.

In VR_I, five spectators can enter a fully virtual environment where they can move freely and interact with both the virtual setting and one another. Participants are represented as avatars, and their movements are captured in real time, enhancing the feeling of immersion. The experience is designed to be social and interactive, allowing participants to see and communicate with each other within the virtual space. The virtual dancers, who appear at varying scales—sometimes as giants and other times as tiny figures—further blur the lines between reality and virtuality.

The project employs advanced motion capture and VR technology developed by Artanim. This technology enables a seamless integration of real movements into the virtual world, making the experience both fluid and realistic.

Since its debut in 2017, VR_I has been showcased at prestigious events such as the Sundance Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. It has toured extensively, reaching audiences in over 40 cities across four continents. The project has received several accolades, including the Innovation Award and the People’s Choice Award at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal.

AΦE’s WHIST

WHIST is an innovative virtual reality experience created by the UK-based dance company AFE, founded by Aoi Nakamura and Esteban Lecoq. This project combines physical theatre, mixed reality technology, 360-degree interactive film, soundscapes, and an architectural art installation to deliver a unique and immersive storytelling experience.

The narrative of WHIST draws inspiration from Freudian case studies and the works of Japanese artist Shuji Terayama. It explores the dreams, fears, and desires of a family, inviting the audience to delve into each family member’s perspective. Participants wear VR headsets and interact with objects in the space, allowing them to choose from over 70 different narrative paths, making each journey unique.

The experience is designed to engage the audience on both conscious and subconscious levels, subtly influencing decision-making through interactive elements woven into the film. This approach positions WHIST at the forefront of immersive storytelling, enabling viewers to become the directors of their own experience, with their choices shaping the narrative direction.

The production encourages viewers to reflect on narrative possibilities and the different ways of perceiving stories, challenging them to think beyond their everyday perspectives. This innovative use of VR technology in the performing arts exemplifies the potential for immersive experiences to transform traditional storytelling methods.

Opera Beyond by Finnish National Opera and Ballet

Opera Beyond is an ambitious initiative by the Finnish National Opera and Ballet that explores the intersection of performing arts and technological innovation. The project utilizes advanced VR and mixed reality (MR) technologies to create immersive and interactive experiences. This includes the development of the XR Stage platform, which allows for the creation of photorealistic digital twins of stage sets. This technology enables creative teams to experiment with and visualize productions long before they are physically constructed, thus improving efficiency and collaboration.

Opera Beyond has produced several groundbreaking works, such as “Laila,” an immersive opera that incorporates artificial intelligence to facilitate audience interaction, and “CircOpera 2.0,” which features a virtual avatar performing on stage. These productions underscore the project’s commitment to blending traditional art forms with modern technology to create new artistic experiences.

The initiative involves collaboration with technology companies like Varjo and Zoan, which assist in integrating VR and MR into the creative process. This partnership allows for real-time collaboration among international teams, enhancing the overall creative development process.

Le Bal de Paris by Blanca Li Dance Company

Created by Double Eye Studios and directed by Kiira Benzing, this groundbreaking production uniquely combines live theater with VR technology, allowing simultaneous performances for both real-world and virtual audiences.

The story of Loveseat revolves around two lonely individuals who join a reality show competition to win the affection of a “Perfect Partner,” represented by an empty chair. This concept invites the audience to project their own interpretations onto the chair, enhancing the interactive experience.

The performance is set on the social VR platform High Fidelity, where actors perform live in front of an audience in Venice while their avatars interact with a virtual audience worldwide. The actors don VR headsets and motion trackers, enabling them to perform in both physical and virtual spaces. This dual performance setup creates a unique blend of traditional theater and VR, offering a new kind of stage where special effects, such as flying and shrinking, can be seamlessly integrated.
