Let’s dust off our boots, pick up that controller, and get ready to pew pew. Today’s list will be full of everything a 21st century technologically fluid gamer like yourself could want. We’ll be talking guns, lasers and anything in between as we make our way to the end of our list of the top 25 best VR shooter games to play this year!
We’ve previously covered everything from horror games, racing simulators and even real-world improvements like journalism and healthcare this year. Today however, it’s time to get back to basics of what Palmer Lucky initially had in mind when he propelled VR into the mainstream. Let’s talk games!
It’s pretty much established by now, that if you were ever a fan of the traditional shooters of the late 90’s such as Call of Duty and the Battlefield franchise, you’ve got one hell of a surprise waiting for you, in the form of VR-based shooters.
This is our list of the 25 best shooter games for VR you can play in 2019:
Serious Sam is back, and this time as an immersive VR shooter game. You know what this means, don’t you? It’s time to relive the good old days of duel-barettas, chainsaws and a million creeps. Bounce from planet to planet as you explore the wonders of randomly generated game play. It’s hard not to try this one and think: “Man, this is what VR is supposed to feel like!”.
Virtual Army: Revolution is a VR-shooter that packs many of the traditional selling points that made counter strike such a massive success back in the 2000’s. It’s got multiplayer, a plethora of weapons and intruiging maps to boot. A worthy download, and the demo is entirely free of charge too!
Number Hunt is up next! Ready for an experience that will make you fall right back in love with the metric system? Number hunt is a bit of a wacky concept for an FPS, and it theme takes some getting used to. With that said though, it’s a lot of fun once you really get into it. Who would have known that math, virtual reality and FPS-based virtual multiplayer would go so well, hand in hand!
Zero Caliber is a gorgeously made FPS for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It is set in a military setting and is to date one of the most realistic shooter games of its kind. The key winning points for this title is definetely the graphics, its rewarding learning curve and overall sense of realism.
Slightly Heroes is a modern cartoonish FPS game that packs a whacky bunch of characters, guns, game modes and maps. If you’re a fan of Pixxar-level animations, FPS and an interesting progression system, this one is for you. A wonderful title to introduce a friend into the wonderful cocktail that is FPS games and virtual reality.
Ground Runner: Trials packs a super interesting combination of vehicle-oriented combat and traditional FPS phenomenology. The game lets you take the seat in the infamous hoverbikes and venture out on a grand arena to fight your way to the top. A true gem among shooter ganmes for VR in 2019.
A Tech Cybernetic is the 21st century’s response to what Doom was back in 1993. The game is explosive, it’s futuristic and packs some of the most memorable foes and scenarios you are likely to find in a game like this. Thumbs up for what genuinely feels like a VR shooter version of that old time favourite!
Raw Data is another futuristic FPS game for the Oculus Rift. The game has received plenty of critical acclaim since its early release, and all around the world it is being regarded as one of the most fun to play. It doesn’t matter if you just have an Oculus, or you manage to have laid your hands on an HTC Vive Pro. This game is available on both platforms and there is PVP in this VR shooter too!
Robo Recall needs to be mentioned in any list where high-end VR shooters are concerned. Arguably the best shooter ever made for the Oculus. Who wouldn’t want to obliterate an army of robots with the loving aid of an artilery of high tech weaponry?
Arizona Sunshine packs quite the package for the eager VR shooter game. If your ideal kind of shooter game for the Oculus Riftis of a horror-esque nature, this game is for you. The game is filled to the brim with themes that seem to could have been taken straight out of “The Walking Dead”.
EVE: Valkyrie is an Oculus Rift shooter game that combines the great intergalactic space battles we’ve seen in Star Wars, with the comfort of being able to not have to put your life at risk as a member of the star-fleet. Nay – grab your controllers, lean back and become one with an army of space ships from the comfort of your own home.
Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades is a comically created VR shooter game for those of you who are not faint of heart. The game provides access to all kinds of firearms, and lets you swing them about at the shooting range all you want. The sandbox contains a vast range of environments, and if you pay close attention you’ll really start to appreciate the audio.
ARTIKA.1 is a futuristic, VR shooter in which which packs and apocalyptic vision of a future where the world has been overrun by evil robots in a cataclysmic event. Go to the barren, frozen wasteland that is a post-apocalyptic Russia and explore the fate of a fallen world, as you strive your best to defend a surviving Colony.
Space Pirate Trainer is yet another awesome shooter game that takes you to outer space to fight all kinds of villainy. A game batched in prizes for its unique sounds and compelling gameplay, you simply gotta pick this one up if you happen to be the proud owner of a Rift.
Onward is one of those VR shooter games that has been with us for a while. We, at the editorial had the opportunity to go try it out with a Cyberith treadmill and it was absolutely fantastic. If you long to go back to the days of Counter Strike, then this shooter sure isn’t a bad pick to mix up some of that nostalgia with modern technology.
The Brookhaven experiment is another dystopian VR shooter for the Oculus that, if not your skill, will test the durability of your headset when you fling it aside due to a jump scare. Highly recommended!
If you feel like the movie The Matrix resonated with you, and you would like to take part of the action yourself, now is the time. Superhot is a VR shooter for the Oculus that takes a whole new spin on what a shooter is supposted to be. The game is not overtly realistic, but oh Lord, is it fun. Break apart glass-like NPC’s with a vast range of creative weaponry.
The community behind this powerhouse of an Oculus VR shooter is very much in love with this super realistic, enjoyable VR experience. Like titles mentioned earlier, this one truly is a trip down memory lane. It has been heralded as the “literal Counter Strike of the Oculus Rift”. If that sounds like something for you – time to get moving!
Okay, this one may not be the most original, but if you don’t mind the cliche nature of its atmosphere, there’s plenty in store for you. Take on wave after wave of demonic zombies, machines and beasts as you struggle in vain to stemk the tide of big baddies coming your way. As shooters for the Oculus Rift goes, this one is fun. Not of the highest visual fidelity, nor the most meaningful of concept, just incredibly entertaining to play.
One of the things you have to keep in mind when browsing for games to a new console or device, is that there is no tried-and-tested way that has been polished through decades. Everything is new, and we have to experiment. With that being the case, we present to you a short, but awesome experiment. If you have a space in your heart for the cel-shading style of the Borderlands franchise, and don’t mind a few laughs, be sure to pick this one up.

If you don’t mind pitching in about $50 for an Oculus shooter game, this almost Borderlands-like game is ready for you. Explore a big range of weapons as you defend your crewmates from a horde of evil, intergalactic monsters hellbent on bringing your crew to its violent end.
Shadowcore has some good voice acting and surprisingly captivating visuals. Enjoy the combination of easy to access gear, a constantly evolving game play and skilled shooting in a hidden gem among Oculus Rift VR shooters.
Enjoy a modern, cartoonish multiplayer game that will make you forget all about the fact that you’re strapped to a wire in the middle of the living room. If you want to figure out how to make your VR-based adventures even more memorable and social, this one is for you!
Wanted Killer VR has plenty of elements the everyday VR shooter enthusiast will find entertaining. First of all there’s the shout out to Gearbox’s flagship title “Borderlands” in the case of beautiful cel-shading styles. On top of that, there’s the wave shooter aspect that works like a gem, and to top it all off there’s so much action that the few hours you’ll be spending in there will need to be topped off with a shower and some ice for your poor fingers!
