As educators work to meet the demands of modern classrooms, VR provides immersive and interactive experiences that connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. This innovative method not only enhances educators’ professional development but also equips them to incorporate advanced technology into their teaching practices, ultimately enriching the learning experience for their students.

As we examine the best VR tools specifically designed for teacher training, it will become evident that this technology has the potential to transform the way educators are trained and supported throughout their careers.

How did we choose the best VR tools for teacher training?

  • It was important to include tools which focus on diverse training needs – subject-specific teaching strategies, classroom management and pedagogical skills.
  • We looked for VR tools that offer realistic simulations, interactive scenarios, and feedback mechanisms.
  • We chose VR tools that are equipped with thorough training manuals, user guides, and support services. As this enable teachers to effectively incorporate VR into their teaching methods and address any technical difficulties they may encounter.

Didascalia Virtual Classroom

The Didascalia Virtual Classroom (Didascalia VC) is an innovative virtual reality learning environment designed to enhance teacher training by focusing on classroom management skills, particularly in secondary education settings. Using VR headsets like the Meta Quest 2, Didascalia VC immerses pre-service teachers in a virtual secondary school classroom. This engaging setup allows users to interact with realistic classroom scenarios, providing a hands-on experience that traditional training methods may lack.

The platform specifically aims to help teachers experience, record, and reflect on emotional and attitudinal issues crucial for effective conflict management. It simulates various classroom situations where disruptive behaviors occur, requiring teachers to respond and manage the classroom environment effectively. During the VR sessions, teachers engage in typical classroom activities, such as explaining new content or conducting cooperative tasks. Unexpected disruptive behaviors are then introduced, prompting teachers to apply their conflict management skills.

Didascalia VC evaluates the actions of the teachers and provides feedback based on their responses to these scenarios. The platform encourages reflective practices by allowing teachers to observe and analyze their actions in the virtual environment.

The platform is currently at Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL 4), meaning that it is a non-commercial prototype that is still in the research phase of development.

VRTEACHER

The VRTEACHER project is an initiative designed to enhance teacher education through the use of VR technology. Its main focus is on improving the digital skills of teachers and preparing them to effectively manage crisis situations in the classroom. It is funded by the Erasmus+ program and involves several partners, including the Cyprus University of Technology (coordinator), University of the Aegean, University Carlos III of Madrid, Fundación Siglo22, Future In Perspective Limited, and The 3CL Foundation.

The project targets both in-service and pre-service teachers, along with higher education students, PhD candidates, academics, researchers, and other education experts interested in implementing VR strategies in teaching.

VRTEACHER offers a safe and controlled environment for experiential learning. It includes scenarios that mimic real-life classroom challenges, allowing teachers to practice and refine their skills in addressing crisis situations. In the VRTEACHER application users can select scenarios to experience different crisis situations from both the teacher’s and student’s perspectives, fostering a comprehensive understanding of classroom dynamics.

The platform supports multiple languages, including English, Spanish, and Greek, and allows users to personalize their experience by choosing the gender of the teacher avatar and adjusting other settings.

Virsabi’s Teach in VR

Virsabi is a company that specializes in developing virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) solutions. Their mission is to leverage these technologies to give businesses a competitive advantage by enhancing various aspects of their operations, including training, marketing, and collaboration. Virsabi has created VR projects for a variety of industries, including entertainment, retail, and industrial sectors.

The aim of their current project is to make it easier for teachers to start using VR as a teaching tool. It offers a structured approach to adopting VR, similar to how educators have previously integrated calculators, computers, and other technological tools into their teaching. In collaboration with European institutions, Virsabi has developed a comprehensive methodology, manual, and guidebook that includes printable checklists. These resources are designed to provide teachers with both a theoretical understanding and practical tools for effectively using VR in the classroom.

VR best tool to train

The project includes a VR experience that allows teachers to engage directly with the technology. This hands-on training helps them understand the features and functionalities of VR, building their confidence and reducing the risk of errors when implementing VR in real classroom settings. The primary focus of this initiative is on vocational education and training, an area that has been identified as having significant potential for VR applications. It offers insights and practical guidance on using immersive VR to enhance teaching and learning in these fields.

Immersive VR by Ericsson and Earth Institute

Ericsson and the Earth Institute have launched an immersive VR initiative designed to enhance teacher training through virtual reality technology. This collaboration is part of the “Connect to Learn” initiative, which aims to support education in developing regions where access to formal training facilities may be limited.

The VR tool immerses teachers in a simulated classroom environment, allowing them to practice their teaching skills in front of virtual students. This setup enables educators to refine their techniques, manage classroom dynamics, and build their confidence in a safe and controlled setting.

The VR experience includes gamification elements that monitor and assess teachers’ performance in real-time. It evaluates various aspects, such as voice volume and tone, frequency of eye contact, and movement around the classroom, providing valuable feedback to help educators improve their skills. Designed to be user-friendly for those without prior VR experience, the tool operates on mobile VR headsets, making it easy to transport and use in various locations. This feature is particularly advantageous for teachers in remote or underserved areas.

As a plus, the VR training tool is optimized to support multiple languages, ensuring it can be utilized by educators from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Talespin

Talespin’s VR platform is primarily designed for workplace training, focusing on developing essential soft skills such as leadership, communication, conflict resolution, and empathy through immersive learning experiences. While the platform is not specifically marketed for teacher training, its features could potentially be adapted for this purpose.

Talespin offers immersive learning modules that simulate real-world scenarios with virtual human characters. These modules could be beneficial for teacher training, particularly in areas like classroom management and communication skills. The platform also includes a no-code content creation feature, which allows users to create custom VR simulations without any coding knowledge. This enables educators to design specific training simulations tailored to teaching environments.

On top of that, Talespin provides a skills analytics dashboard that offers insights into learning performance. This feature can help educators assess and improve their teaching strategies. Talespin’s content is flexible in its deployment, as it can be accessed on various devices, including VR headsets and desktop applications, making it adaptable for different training settings.

Talespin’s pricing depends on the number of people using the platform For 25 user licenses, the cost is $3,225 for a 6-month period or $4,950 for an annual subscription. For 50 user licenses, the cost is $6,450 for 6 months or $9,900 per year. For 75 user licenses, the cost is $9,675 for a 6-month term or $14,850 annually. For more than 75 users, pricing is available upon request.
