San Francisco-based virtual reality studio Black Sun Productions is set to release its inaugural game, Metamorphosis VR, on October 10, 2024. This innovative adventure-platformer draws inspiration from Franz Kafka’s renowned novella, “The Metamorphosis,” and will be available on Meta Quest 2 and 3 for $19.99.
A Bold Reimagining of a Classic
Metamorphosis VR offers a fresh take on the 2020 PC game by Ovid Works and Untold Tales, reimagining it for the virtual reality platform. Players will navigate the surreal world of early 1900s Vienna as Gregor, a traveling salesman who mysteriously transforms into a cockroach. The game challenges players to explore this strange new existence, interact with a diverse cast of over 100 insect characters, and uncover multiple endings, all while striving to save Gregor’s friend and reclaim his humanity.
An Immersive Experience
Corbin Chase, CEO of Black Sun Productions, emphasized the game’s ability to leverage VR’s unique capacity to alter perception and scale, creating an immersive experience that blends confusion, wonder, and beauty. The game aims to transport players into a richly detailed world filled with bizarre locations and high-fidelity graphics, enhancing the narrative’s Kafkaesque elements.

Frank Kafka
Franz Kafka was a German-language writer born on July 3, 1883, in Prague, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Kafka’s work is known for blending realism with fantastical elements, often featuring protagonists who face surreal and incomprehensible challenges, reflecting themes of alienation, existential anxiety, and absurdity. His most notable works include the novella The Metamorphosis and the novels The Trial and The Castle. The term “Kafkaesque” has been coined to describe situations reminiscent of those in his writing, characterized by absurdity and bureaucratic complexity.
Kafka was born into a middle-class Jewish family and had a complicated relationship with his domineering father, which profoundly influenced his life and writing. Despite training as a lawyer, Kafka worked at an insurance company, which allowed him time to write. He struggled with self-doubt, leading him to destroy much of his work during his lifetime. Most of his surviving writings were published posthumously by his friend Max Brod, despite Kafka’s wishes for them to be destroyed.
Kafka’s philosophical outlook is often associated with existentialism and absurdism, as his stories explore the search for meaning in a seemingly meaningless world. He died of tuberculosis on June 3, 1924, at the age of 40.
