A groundbreaking new experience is bringing Osvaldo Golijov’s celebrated La Pasión según San Marcos into the digital age. The Gateway Chamber Orchestra, in collaboration with immersive design studio Agile Lens, has unveiled La Pasión XR—a virtual reality adaptation that invites audiences to step inside the music and witness the performance from entirely new perspectives. This innovative project is now available on Steam and the Epic Games Store, coinciding with the release of the orchestra’s latest album, Live at 25, through Summit Records.
A New Dimension for a Modern Classic
Originally composed to mark the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach’s death, Golijov’s La Pasión según San Marcos has become one of the most acclaimed sacred works of the 21st century. The composition reinterprets the Passion story through a Latin American lens, blending Afro-Cuban rhythms, capoeira, salsa, flamenco, and poetic texts in Spanish, Aramaic, and Latin. The result is an electrifying fusion of ritual, dance, and communal celebration.
With La Pasión XR, this vibrant work is transformed into an immersive, interactive experience. Utilizing advanced volumetric capture, 3D photogrammetry, and point cloud reconstruction, the Gateway Chamber Orchestra’s 2023 performance is reimagined as a virtual dreamscape. Users can navigate freely within the space—floating among singers, passing through dissolving instruments, or standing beside dancers as the music unfolds. The environment reacts dynamically to every note and movement, enveloping guests in a synesthetic world where sound and visuals intertwine.

Immersive Features and Accessibility
Designed for modern PC-based virtual reality, La Pasión XR includes two full movements and a highlight sequence, all rendered with volumetric performance, 360-degree stereo video, and responsive visual effects. Users can explore the space using teleportation, smooth movement, or snap rotation, while floating portals offer instant access to different viewpoints and moments within the performance.
For those without VR headsets, a 360° cinematic version of the performance will soon be available on YouTube, providing a panoramic view of the music, choreography, and unique instrumentation at the heart of this production.
A New Way to Experience the Passion
Timed with the Easter season, La Pasión XR offers a powerful, contemporary way to engage with the Passion narrative. Rather than presenting the story as distant history, the virtual experience invites audiences to live it as an unfolding journey of sound, movement, and meaning. The project is available now for $4.99 on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with a 20% discount during its initial launch period.
