Loony Laps Brings Die-Cast Kart Racing to Meta Quest in Q1 2027

Solo developer Paulo Cunha is preparing to bring miniature-scale racing chaos to Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S with Loony Laps, a VR and mixed-reality arcade racer planned for release in Q1 2027.

Developed independently in Guarulhos, São Paulo, Brazil, Loony Laps turns the classic fantasy of building an elaborate toy-car circuit into an interactive virtual experience. Players will race detailed die-cast-style vehicles across compact but elaborate courses packed with loops, ramps, magnetic walls, alternate routes, moving hazards, portals, and oversized objects.

A Toy Racing Set in VR

Rather than presenting kart racing from a conventional cockpit or behind-the-car camera, Loony Laps is designed to make players feel as if a complete miniature racing set has been placed directly in front of them.

The game’s cars are modeled after realistic die-cast toys, featuring reflective paint, visible windows, detailed wheels, and material effects intended to make them look convincing at close range. Between events, players can pick up cars and trophies, rotate them in their hands, and inspect the miniature details from any angle.

Tracks follow the same philosophy. They embrace exaggerated arcade-racing ideas while maintaining a physically believable toy-world presentation. Courses can twist through stacked paths, inverted loops, magnetic sections that send vehicles up walls, split routes, and large-scale machinery that transforms a small racing circuit into a chaotic obstacle course.

Loony Laps VR/MR 29 tracks on launch

29 Tracks of Miniature Mayhem

At launch, Loony Laps is set to include 29 handcrafted tracks. Each course is built around fast, accessible arcade racing rather than simulation-style driving, with short sessions and replayability at the center of the design.

Players can expect classic track elements such as jumps, hairpin turns, loops, and shortcuts, but the races will also feature unpredictable gimmicks. Giant rolling objects, projectiles, shifting obstacles, and portals can disrupt a race at any moment.

Some portals simply move racers to another part of the circuit. Others introduce more unusual consequences, including transforming a vehicle into a squeaky toy animal for the rest of the lap. Certain hazards can also turn a car into solid chrome temporarily, granting a brief period of invincibility.

Among the announced circuits are The Classic 8, Spiral Up!, Pinball Mania, Wall Trick, Spaghetti Tube, 3 Ring Circus, Magnet Danger, Off the Walls, Save Ferris, and Double Danger.

VR and Mixed-Reality Racing

Loony Laps will support both traditional VR play and mixed reality.

In VR, races unfold in a fully digital environment built around the miniature racing setup. The player can look over the tracks, follow the tiny cars through their layouts, and interact with the game world from a close-up perspective.

Mixed reality, meanwhile, places the circuit inside the player’s actual room through Meta Quest passthrough technology. The racing set can be repositioned within the available space, while players can physically move around it to watch cars speed through loops, ramps, and magnetic track sections from different viewpoints.

According to the developer, mixed reality is meant to be a core part of the game’s identity rather than a simple passthrough mode with a virtual track added on top. The aim is to make the player’s home feel like it has been transformed into a tabletop racing arena.

Loony Laps VR different playable modes

Championship, Quick Race, and Time Trial

The single-player experience will feature three race modes:

  • Championship lets players progress through a structured series of events while unlocking more cars and tracks.
  • Quick Race allows players to choose a vehicle and course immediately without needing to advance through the campaign.
  • Time Trial focuses on setting and improving lap times across the game’s full track list.

Driving is handled by grabbing a virtual steering wheel and physically turning it with Meta Quest controllers. The control scheme is intended to keep the experience intuitive and playful, matching the game’s toy-racing concept instead of pursuing a demanding simulation approach.

A Long-Term Solo Project

Loony Laps is being created by Paulo Cunha, a solo developer with a background in film and visual effects. Cunha is responsible for the project’s programming, visual presentation, track design, game design, and production.

The project began development in 2022 and entered its public reveal phase in 2026, starting with its first trailer and gameplay footage. Its Meta Horizon Store page went live on September 2, 2026, allowing Quest users to wishlist the game ahead of release.

Cunha said the project grew from a desire to make miniature racing feel physical in VR rather than simply placing small cars onto a digital screen.

“I didn’t just want small cars on a screen — I wanted the player to feel like there was an actual die-cast racing set sitting in front of them,” Cunha said. “I’m developing the game completely solo, so it has grown one track, one car and one ridiculous idea at a time.”

Loony Laps Release Date and Platforms

Loony Laps is scheduled to launch for Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest 3S in Q1 2027. A price has not yet been announced.
