Meta has announced a new developer accelerator aimed at fostering the development of innovative lifestyle apps for the Quest 3, leveraging mixed reality (MR), artificial intelligence (AI), and hand-tracking technologies. The Meta Quest Lifestyle App Accelerator is designed to support small teams in creating engaging and retentive consumer experiences that utilize the unique capabilities of the Quest 3 in various lifestyle categories.

Program Details

The accelerator offers selected participants seed-stage grant funding, product resources, and mentoring from Meta and participating venture capital partners, including a16z, Anorak Ventures, Bitkraft Ventures, Boost VC, and Lightspeed. The program is structured into three paid milestones to help teams prototype their concepts, with up to three Quest 3 dev kits provided for teams in supported countries. Notably, participants will retain full ownership of their intellectual property, code, assets, design, and distribution rights.

Eligibility and Focus

The program is open to small teams working on novel lifestyle apps that drive engagement with Meta Quest users. Meta is looking for founders who want to build companies dedicated to MR apps in lifestyle categories such as fashion, beauty, home design, shopping, cooking, DIY, arts & crafts, and more. The company cites Zac Reid’s PianoVision, which uses mixed reality to teach users how to play piano, as an example of the type of innovative app they are seeking.

Timeline and Requirements

Submissions for the accelerator are now open and will close on October 15, 2024. Meta will select participating teams on December 31, 2024, with the program running from December 2024 to May 2025. Interested teams should review the full eligibility requirements and developer FAQ to ensure they qualify.

Key Points

  • Focus on Lifestyle Apps: The accelerator targets apps that enhance daily life, such as fashion, beauty, home design, and more.
  • MR, AI, and Hand-Tracking: Apps should utilize mixed reality, AI, and hand-tracking technologies to create engaging experiences.
  • Seed Funding and Resources: Selected teams will receive funding, product resources, and mentoring from Meta and participating VC partners.
  • Ownership and IP: Participants retain full ownership of their IP, code, assets, design, and distribution rights.
  • Timeline: Submissions are open until October 15, 2024, with the program running from December 2024 to May 2025.

This initiative marks a significant step in Meta’s efforts to expand the scope of its Quest 3 platform, encouraging developers to create innovative lifestyle apps that showcase the capabilities of mixed reality and AI.
