During this year’s Anime NYC convention in November, Bandai Namco Filmworks and Atlas V announced their new collaborative project – “Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom”. This interactive VR experience, published by Astrea Immersive, is expected to open a new chapter for storytelling ventures in virtual reality. The Gundam Universe will receive yet another story full of thrill and adventures, which will be immensely enhanced with innovative interactive narrative elements.
For those unfamiliar with the Mobile Suit Gundam, it is a Japanese military science fiction TV series that centers around giant robots, or mecha called ‘Gundam’. This franchise is credited for defining the ‘real robot’ mecha anime genre.
What new was revealed about “Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom”?
Not even a month after this project’s announcement, more details were revealed during Upload VR Winter Showcase, which was live-streamed on IGN’s YouTube Channel on December 6th. During this showcase viewers were surprised to learn more about this intriguing VR story, as a visual presentation of the official teaser and additional story artwork was shown. This introduction was accompanied by a message from Kiichiro Inoue, Bandai Namco Fimworks’ Deputy General Manager, who shared more about the company’s effort to adopt pioneer practices regarding VR’s interactive capabilities, which are vital for the development of further storytelling projects.
Gundam Universe fans are anticipating more substantial insights about this promising interactive movie. The bar has been raised high when it comes to delivering both visually and mentally stimulating VR experiences. Keeping in mind that only renowned parties are involved in this project, it is expected that if successful, it will establish a new formula for creating immersive stories that are not just viewed, read, or listened to but rather fully experienced.
What is yet to be expected from VR storytelling?
Bandai Namco Filmworks and Atlas V have joined forces to experiment and even prove that there is a lot of potential for VR storytelling by incorporating innovative approaches like interactive features. That way, the traditional narrative is improved by making the story somewhat of a tangible experience for the viewer, who is actively immersed in the spiel.
What’s left to do is wait for “Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom ”’s release and hope that its pioneer approach will truly live up to the hype, thus paving a new way for more VR storytelling ventures ahead.
