New initiative sets benchmark for workplace wellbeing across studios
Safe In Our World, the charity dedicated to supporting mental health in gaming, has launched the industry’s first Mental Health Star Accreditation, a program designed to recognize companies that actively prioritize the wellbeing of their teams.
The accreditation, the first of its kind tailored specifically to the unique challenges of the games sector, provides businesses with the opportunity to earn recognition for building psychologically safe workplace environments.
A Holistic Approach to Wellbeing
Developed by mental health specialists with direct experience in game development, the Mental Health Star Accreditation begins with a full company-wide audit. This process assesses policies, culture, sentiments, and practical measures already in place. Following the review, companies receive a comprehensive report highlighting strengths, as well as detailed recommendations for areas of improvement.
“Our industry has long needed an accreditation that understands its distinct pressures,” said Erla Arnadottir, trustee for Safe In Our World and Head of Business Development at LootLocker. “It’s clear that this program has been designed to work for companies of all shapes and sizes, from small teams to major studios.”
Tiers of Excellence: Dedicated, Accomplished, Outstanding

Those taking part in the accreditation process can achieve one of three recognition levels depending on their results:
- Dedicated
- Accomplished
- Outstanding
Successful companies will hold the accreditation for three years, with ongoing annual check-ins. Accredited businesses also receive a media kit of digital assets to showcase their commitment on social platforms and company websites.
For those not initially meeting the criteria, Safe In Our World ensures the process remains supportive rather than punitive, providing constructive feedback and resources to guide future improvements. Companies can reapply whenever they feel ready.
Industry-Wide Reach for Studios of All Sizes
The Mental Health Star Accreditation is open to everyone in the industry, from two-person indie developers to large triple-A publishers. Whether a company is beginning its mental health journey or refining already robust practices, Safe In Our World emphasizes that there is no wrong time to get involved.
The program aims to spark long-term cultural change in games workplaces, helping create healthier environments for developers, publishers, service providers, and beyond.
