Star Wars Might Hit the Cinema in Virtual Reality with ILMxLAB

Star Wars is one of those franchises that has been with us for generations, and since it’s premiere on that night back in 1977, the story has been almost seared into our minds, as the unparalleled King of Science Fiction. Something we’re more than happy to concede here at VR Today Magazine.

With the emerging trend and tech of Virtual Reality, one of the most heatedly debated subjects of it’s implementation into daily media has been that of how and if Hollywood would start playing around with it.

It would seem that the team over at Lucas Film has taken on the challenge on being some of the first movers, which is seen through the work of their fresh new organization ILMxLAB. By harnessing the talents of ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) and Skywalker Sound, the team works on implementing virtual experiences into future platforms. These experiences include:

  • Virtual Reality
  • Augmented Reality
  • Real-time cinema
  • Theme park Entertainment
  • Narrative-based experience

The fact that there’s a dedicated team of experts working hard implementing this new and exciting technology into one of the world’s most memorable franchises is something that bodes well for the industry and the future of virtual reality.

We’re starting to pivot towards actually developing a new medium for telling stories that the public can get and experience for themselves. Anything from real time cinema, virtual reality or augmented reality. John Gaeta, Creative Director at ILMxLab.

What’s Next?

Since we’re still only in Virtual Reality’s infancy, there’s much that remains to be seen. What we can say is that we are keen that somebody out there are working hard on making our industry, the most exciting side of technology, a main stream concept. Best of luck to the team at ILMxLAB.
