HEROmation, the indie studio founded by industry veterans Michael Cawood and Julie Pifher Cawood, is set to launch The Phoenix Gene on Meta Quest this June 5th for $24.99. This ambitious title promises to redefine third-person VR shooters with its dynamic gameplay, rich multiverse narrative, and handcrafted world design.
A Tale of Fate, Flames, and Fractured Timelines
The Phoenix Gene thrusts players into the role of Firestorm, a reborn Phoenix tasked with rewriting humanity’s destiny. At the heart of the story is Jackie, a young janitor entangled in the dangerous fallout of Life Rite’s quest for immortality. As Firestorm, players must guide Jackie through a series of collapsing realities, battling mutant horrors, deadly drones, and the ever-present threat of dimensional collapse.
The game’s world is already in chaos, its multiverse fraying at the seams as Life Rite’s experiments unleash unpredictable consequences. Players don’t just watch the world unravel—they soar through it, physically controlling Firestorm with intuitive hand movements, weaving through crumbling environments and unleashing devastating fire-based attacks.
Gameplay That Breaks the Mold
The Phoenix Gene stands out with its unique approach to VR combat and movement. Firestorm is controlled like a living paper airplane, gripped between the player’s hands. This allows for full-body interaction—dodging, weaving, and firing in any direction, including behind you. The game’s on-rails system is designed for both seated and standing play, ensuring accessibility and comfort for all players.
One of the game’s most innovative features is its “realm toggling” mechanic. Inspired by classics like Ikaruga, players can shift between parallel dimensions in real time, each with its own threats and secrets. Matching Firestorm’s color to enemy bullets allows for absorption and power charging, while shifting realities opens new paths and tactical opportunities.
Immersion Without Limits
To keep players fully immersed, The Phoenix Gene eschews traditional HUD elements. Instead, Firestorm’s body visually reflects health and energy levels, encouraging players to rely on instinct and intuition. The game also offers a range of comfort settings, including snap and smooth turning, vignette options, and support for both sitting and standing playstyles.
A World That Demands Exploration
Players will traverse eight distinct levels, each set in a different alternate timeline. These environments blend post-apocalyptic horror, biotech sci-fi, and rich narrative symbolism. Along the way, players can upgrade Firestorm’s abilities, collect gold flames, and face off against formidable bosses, including a massive leviathan that circles the player’s space.
