Vaelorys open playtest invites Meta Quest

Vaelorys Open Playtest Brings Dark Fantasy Dungeon Crawling to Meta Quest

Martin Rumenov 1 month ago 0 24

Spellbound Studio is preparing to open the gates to Vaelorys, an upcoming dark-fantasy VR action RPG built around spellcasting, dungeon exploration, character progression, and loot-driven combat. Meta Quest players will be able to try the game during an open playtest running from September 7 at 10:00 AM PT until September 22.

The test gives players an early opportunity to explore the world of Vaelorys while helping the independent VR developer refine the experience ahead of its wider release. Participants will be able to battle monsters, take on tougher encounters, experiment with builds, and share feedback that may influence the game’s balance, dungeon layouts, and future systems.

A Dark Fantasy RPG Built for VR

Vaelorys aims to translate the core appeal of action RPG dungeon crawlers into a fully immersive virtual-reality setting. Rather than controlling a spellcaster through traditional inputs, players use hand movements to cast magic, physically aiming attacks and reacting to threats in close-range combat.

The game sends adventurers into dangerous ruins, hostile wilderness areas, and monster-filled dungeons in search of stronger equipment. Like other loot-focused RPGs, Vaelorys will encourage players to collect rare gear, discover powerful artifacts, and develop builds that suit their preferred approach to combat.

Spellbound Studio describes the open playtest as an important step in the project’s development, especially as the team plans to evolve the game through an Early Access model. The studio wants players to test its systems directly and provide candid feedback as it works toward creating a deeper VR RPG experience.

What Players Can Test

The September playtest will include several of Vaelorys’ main gameplay pillars, including gesture-based combat, progression mechanics, spell upgrades, and dungeon exploration.

Players will be able to unlock and improve more than 30 spells, creating magical loadouts tailored to different situations. Some may focus on overwhelming enemy waves with destructive area attacks, while others may prefer carefully aimed spells, defensive options, or combinations designed around a particular character build.

Key elements featured in the playtest include:

  • Gesture-based spellcasting, allowing players to use physical hand motions to unleash arcane attacks.
  • More than 30 spells that can be unlocked and upgraded over time.
  • Dungeon-crawling gameplay centered on dangerous ruins, hostile creatures, valuable equipment, and rare loot.
  • Character progression through experience gains, skill upgrades, and customizable builds.
  • Mid-bosses, monster waves, and larger encounters that require players to dodge, block, and aim in real time.
  • Support for seated, standing, and room-scale VR play, offering flexibility for different Meta Quest setups.

Community Feedback Will Shape Early Access

Spellbound Studio plans to develop Vaelorys as an evolving VR RPG, with player feedback playing a central role in how the experience changes over time. The developer says feedback collected during the open playtest could affect balancing decisions, dungeon design, and the rollout of new content and gameplay features.

That community-led approach may be particularly important for a game with deep progression and buildcrafting. Testing how players respond to spell combinations, enemy difficulty, rewards, and physical combat demands can help the studio identify which systems feel satisfying in VR and which need further adjustment.

Vaelorys is designed as a Diablo-inspired dungeon crawler, but its VR-first structure puts players directly inside each encounter. Instead of simply clicking abilities and moving a character through dark ruins, players will cast spells with their hands and physically react to incoming danger.
